I love summer time but I hate bugs, especially mosquitoes, but they love me. When I was younger my mom said it was because I was so sweet. I always put on tons of bug spray but I hated how I smelled and hated being sticky.
Now I am faced with solving this problem for my own children. We spend a lot of time outside. My husband grills while we play games and enjoy time as a family.
I know there are a lot of people who will only use DEET products but personally I avoid chemicals like DEET. DEET is a known eye irritant and can causes soreness, rashes, or blistering. DEET has also been linked to neurological problems in children and even adults. Also DEET is toxic to birds and aquatic life.
Spark Nature is a blend of essential oils which naturally repel mosquitoes. This works great and smells great. The only problem I have with it is getting coverage over my whole body. I need to find a way to make it a spray.
You can either rub lavender flowers on your skin or use lavender essential oil, especially hot parts of your body like your neck, underarms, and behind your legs.
Eating Garlic is an easy way to repel mosquitoes. For some reason mosquitoes and most bugs do not like garlic and will stay away as your body secretes garlic from your pores.
Bounce Dryer Sheets (okay not natural)-
Put a dryer sheet in your pocket while you are hiking, camping, or outside. The dryer sheet will help repel mosquitoes and you won’t smell bad or have bug spray all over your body. I have also rubbed a dryer sheet on my arms and legs when hiking and it also worked well.
Rub fresh or dried leaves of basil leaves on exposed skin.
It has been said that taking a Vitamin B-1 tablet can help repel mosquitoes.
We found that rosemary also deters mosquitoes; my husband grabs some from the garden and puts it on the hot coals while he BBQ’s. Rosemary also makes our food taste even better.
Wear light colored clothing; mosquitoes are attracted to dark colors.
Stay in a breeze or close to a fan.
Mosquitoes are attracted to carbon dioxide which humans release when we are hot or exercising.
